Vietnam releases 3.1 million metric tons of plastic waste annually. Waste pickers play a crucial role in recycling but remain formally unrecognized.

Key Findings:

Research conducting among 300 informal waste pickers in Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City reveals:

87.7% are women, mostly over 45 with low education levels

Most work without protective gear, prone to accidents and illness

Low and unstable income (100-200,000 VND/day)

Many face community stigma and avoid social interactions
