On October 9, 2024, at Nguyen Chi Thanh Secondary School, the Center for Adaptive Capacity Building Research (CAB Vietnam) hosted a meeting to develop an action plan for the project “Building and Implementing a Roadmap to Reduce Single-Use Plastics in Schools in Son Tra District.” The event gathered over 40 representatives, including principals, teachers, youth leaders, and staff from four schools: Vanh Khuyen Kindergarten, Quang Trung Primary School, Nguyen Chi Thanh Secondary School, and Son Tra High School.
During the meeting, participants reviewed reports from the Knowledge-Attitude-Practice survey on plastic waste and waste audits. This was followed by in-depth discussions on the current waste management situation in each school. Based on real data, they collaboratively set project goals and tailored them to fit each school’s specific needs.
One notable highlight was Vanh Khuyen Kindergarten’s initiative to reduce diaper and milk carton waste—two major sources of plastic in kindergartens. Teachers will train children to use the toilet at scheduled times to minimize diaper usage, and parents will be encouraged not to send additional milk cartons, as the teachers already provide nutritious milk at school.
After the discussions, the schools finalized their plans and timelines for implementing the next steps. They are expected to submit their detailed action plans to the project management team by early next week, ahead of the project kick-off workshop scheduled for October 31 at Son Tra High School.
The project is sponsored by Pacific Environment and implemented by CAB Vietnam and the Da Nang Union of Science and Technology Associations. It aims to drive positive changes in reducing plastic waste and to establish a roadmap for minimizing single-use plastics, serving as a model to be expanded across Son Tra District and the city of Da Nang.
